The Cardinals clipped Mike Marshall for a run in the ninth inning and defeated the Dodgers, 2-1. Doug Rau, the Dodgers' starting pitcher, scored their run in third, hitting a single and counting on a double by Davey Lopes and sacrifice fly by Jim Wynn. Ted Simmons evened the score with a homer in the sixth.

Marshall, who made his 83rd appearance of the season in relief of Rau, yielded a single by Ken Reitz to open the ninth. Luis Melendez ran for Reitz. After a sacrifice by Mike Tyson, Luis Melendez advanced to third following a long fly by Tim McCarver. Lou Brock then singled to drive in the winning run.
