Doc Medich, who allowed only five hits and retired 15 straight batters at one stretch in his performance, shut out the Brewers, 3-0, to pitch the Yankees into a first-place tie with the Red Sox in the East Division. Kevin Kobel, a winner over the Yankees in three previous confrontations, was rapped for two runs in the first inning on doubles by Elliott Maddox and Lou Piniella and a single by Thurman Munson.
