. . . where the 1970s live forever!

The Orioles were within three outs of tying the 1903 Pirates' major league record of six straight shutouts, but then had to settle for a 3-2 victory over the Indians when Charlie Spikes homered with a man on base in the ninth inning. Ross Grimsley had the Indians under control on four hits until George Hendrick doubled and Spikes snapped the Orioles' shutout string with his round-tripper.

However, the Orioles set a new A. L. record for most consecutive scoreless innings, 54, breaking the old mark of 47 by the Indians in 1948. The Orioles scored on a sacrifice fly by Paul Blair in third, added an unearned run in the fourth and completed their triumph over Gaylord Perry when Mark Belanger walked in the seventh, stole second and crossed the plate on a single by Rich Coggins.
