Leaping higher than the eight-foot fence in center field, Morris Nettles caught a line drive by Pat Kelly with the bases loaded in the sixth inning to prevent a grand-slam homer and save the Angels' 3-1 victory over the White Sox. Nolan Ryan was the beneficiary of Nettles' catch. The Angels used a safe bunt by Denny Doyle, sacrifice by Tom Egan and single by Orlando Ramirez for a run in the first and added another in the fourth on a walk to Bruce Bochte, single by Joe Lahoud and forceout by Dave Chalk.

The White Sox picked up their run in the fifth on singles by Bucky Dent, Lee Richard and Tony Muser, but the Angels clinched the decision with their final tally in the seventh.
