A homer by Graig Nettles and the five-hit pitching of Larry Gura enabled the Yankees to gain a 1-0 victory in the second game of a doubleheader after the Tigers won the first game, 8-3, on the strength of a five-run outburst in the fourth inning. The Tigers opened their big inning in the lidlifter with a run on a walk to Al Kaline and singles by Bill Freehan and Leon Roberts. After a pass to Marvin Lane loaded the bases, Aurelio Rodriguez singled to drive in two runs. A walk to Ed Brinkman filled the sacks again and, after Mike Wallace relieved, Gary Sutherland singled to plate another pair. Freehan added to the Tigers' total with a homer in the seventh. Lou Piniella batted in one run for the Yankees with a double and Nettles accounted for two others with a homer.

In the nightcap, Nettles hit his second homer of the day, connecting in the second inning, to enable Gura to win his duel with Woodie Fryman. [The Sporting News]
