Although Lou Brock failed to add to his stolen base total of 101, the Cardinals' fleet-footed outfielder provided a victory for his club's cause, driving in a run with a bases-loaded single in the ninth inning to defeat the Mets, 2-1. The Mets scored their run off Bob Gibson in the second inning on a double by John Milner and single by Wayne Garrett. The Cards caught up against Jon Matlack in the fourth. Ted Sizemore walked, took second after a long fly by Reggie Smith and scored on a double by Ted Simmons.

In the ninth, Simmons walked and was forced by Bake McBride. Ken Reitz singled, sending McBride to third. After an intentional pass to Danny Godby, Ron Hunt made his first appearance in a Cardinal uniform after being obtained from the Expos and forced McBride at the plate.
