Despite a yield of 10 hits, Bill Bonham posted a shutout and pitched the Cubs to a 3-0 victory over the Phillies. Bonham escaped from his major threat in the third inning, striking out Mike Schmidt and getting Willie Montanez on an infield out after the Phillies had loaded the bases with one away on singles by Steve Carlton, Dave Cash and Larry Bowa.

Carlton was less fortunate in the Cubs' half, giving up a walk to Bonham and then falling victim to a homer by Rick Monday. The Cubs added another run in the eighth on doubles by Bill Madlock and Steve Swisher. [The Sporting News]
