The Padres ended their 10-game losing streak by erupting for six runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Astros, 8-4. Paul Siebert, lefthander from Columbus (Southern), made his major league debut with the Astros and allowed only four hits and two runs before being removed for a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning when the Astros scored three times to take a 4-2 lead. Mike Cosgrove relieved and was the principal victim of the Padres' rally in the eighth.

Enzo Hernandez singled and Cito Gaston doubled in pinch-hitting roles to start the uprising. Hernandez crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Derrel Thomas. After Glenn Beckert grounded out, Johnny Grubb drove in the tying run with a single. Dave Winfield doubled to chase Cosgrove. Jerry Johnson walked Randy Elliott to load the bases. Willie McCovey then batted for Mike Ivie and singled, driving in two runs to put the Padres ahead.
