Vida Blue and Catfish Hunter guided the Athletics to a sweep over the Royals with shutout performances. A two-run homer by Gene Tenace and run-scoring triple by Claudell Washington backed Blue's two-hit, 3-0 triumph in the opener.

Joe Rudi and Sal Bando each hit homers in the second game, driving in three runs apiece, as Hunter became the majors' top winner with his 23rd victory, 7-0. Bert Campaneris doubled home the other A's tally as the A. L. West leaders moved 6½ games ahead of the second-place Rangers. [The Sporting News]
