The streaking Yankees scored one run in the first with the help of two Red Sox errors and never were headed as they beat Boston at home for the first time since July 31 of last year, 6-3, and took over first place in the A.L. East. Chris Chambliss homered for a 2-0 Yank lead in the second, but Dwight Evans homered for the Red Sox to cut the lead to 2-1 in the third.

New York scored another unearned run in the fourth as Graig Nettles scored when catcher Bob Montgomery dropped a throw, then built their advantage to 6-1 with two more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth. Boston closed out the scoring with a two-run eighth, one marker coming on Carl Yastrzemski's 15th homer. [The Sporting News]
