Fred Norman evened his record at 11-11 despite giving up homers to Rich Morales and Johnny Grubb in the third. He was knocked out of the game in the sixth when a ball off the bat of Randy Elliott struck him on the knee, as the Reds turned back the Padres, 8-3.

Reliever Pedro Borbon stopped San Diego cold after taking over with two out in the sixth, but the Padres' Bill Laxton, who relieved starter Dave Freisleben in the fourth, was tagged for homers by Tony Perez and Dave Concepcion during the four-run Reds' outburst in the fifth, which completed the scoring in the game.
