With a crowd of 22,628 on hand to boost their attendance to 2,032,383 for a new club record, the Reds slugged their way to a sweep of a doubleheader with the Braves, 9-6 and 6-2. Three grand-slam homers marked the day's action. Darrell Evans hit one for the Braves off Tom Carroll in the second inning of the lidlifter after a walk to Davey Johnson, an error and single by Ron Reed loaded the bases. The Reds came back with a grand slam by Cesar Geronimo in their half of the second. Dave Concepcion singled, stole second and third and scored on a wild throw by Vic Correll to start the stanza. A walk to Ken Griffey, pass to Darrel Chaney, forceout by Hal King and infield hit by Pete Rose then loaded the bases for the first jackpot wallop of Geronimo's major league career. The Braves tied the score at 5-5 in fourth, but Geronimo and Johnny Bench walked in the fifth and Dan Driessen drove them home to put the Reds ahead to stay. Tony Perez added a homer in the seventh.

Bench drove in all of the Reds' runs in the nightcap, hitting a two-run homer in the first inning and a grand slam in the fourth. Evans homered for one of the Braves' runs off Pat Darcy, who was a winner in his major league debut with the Reds. [The Sporting News]
