John Hiller set an A. L. record for most victories by a relief pitcher, winning for the 17th time this season, when Tom Veryzer hit his first major league homer with a man on base in the 10th inning to defeat the Brewers, 9-7. The former record was held by Dick Radatz, who won 16 games in relief with the Red Sox in 1964.

The Brewers took an early 3-0 lead before the Tigers tied the score with a three-run homer by Bill Freehan in the fourth. The Brewers forged ahead again with four runs in the fifth. Ken Berry singled for his third RBI of the game, Johnny Briggs tripled and Darrell Porter capped the outburst with a round-tripper.

The Tigers came back with a two-run double by Leon Roberts in the sixth and tied the score with another two-run double by Ben Oglivie in the seventh. Hiller took over as the Tigers' third pitcher of the game in the eighth and was a winner in the 10th when Roberts singled and Veryzer hit his homer.
