Breaking a close game apart with a grand-slam homer by Jim Wynn, the Dodgers defeated the Reds, 7-1, to assume a 2½-game lead in the West Division race. Fred Norman batted in a Reds' run with a single in the fifth inning, but the lefthander was chased in the sixth when the Dodgers moved ahead, 2-1.

With Pedro Borbon on the mound for the Reds in the seventh, Steve Yeager beat out an infield hit and Don Sutton sacrificed. Davey Lopes singled, sending Yeager to third, and took second himself on the throw. The Reds then passed Bill Buckner intentionally before Wynn came up and hit his 31st homer of the season to tie the Los Angeles club record set by Frank Howard in 1962.
