Paul Siebert, lefthander from Columbus (Southern), pitched the Astros to a 6-0 victory in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Giants came back to win the second game, 8-4. Siebert, son of former major league first baseman Dick Siebert, who now is baseball coach at Minnesota U., yielded only four hits in gaining his first major league victory. The Astros handed Mike Caldwell his first loss in Candlestick Park this season after the lefthander had won eight straight decisions at home. Caldwell gave up four runs in the first seven innings, including a homer by Wilbur Howard. The Astros then tagged Randy Moffitt for homers by Cesar Cedeno and Doug Rader in the eighth. In the nightcap, Bruce Miller batted in three runs, Gary Matthews accounted for two and Bobby Bonds hit a homer to escort John D'Acquisto to victory. [The Sporting News] |
