In a tremendous relief performance, Al Hrabosky struck out three straight batters with the potential tying runs on base in the ninth inning to enable the Cardinals to defeat the Phillies, 3-1, and extend their East Division lead to 1½ games over the Pirates. The Cardinals tagged Steve Carlton for two runs in the fourth on walks to Ted Simmons and Joe Torre, a single by Ken Reitz and double by Bob Forsch.

The third run counted in the ninth on a triple by Simmons and single by Torre. In the Phillies' half, Dave Cash and Larry Bowa singled to chase Forsch. Mike Garman relieved and yielded a run-scoring single by Mike Schmidt. Hrabosky then took over and whiffed Willie Montanez, Greg Luzinski and Tony Taylor. [The Sporting News]
