Scoring seven times in the first three frames, the Reds finished with 13 hits and turned back the Padres, 9-2. Cincinnati put the game away in the third with a four-run flurry ignited by solo homers by Dan Driessen and Cesar Geronimo.

Pete Rose later singled home another run and a fourth came on a bases-loaded wild pitch. Johnny Bench was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth to force in the eighth Cincinnati run, then drove home Rose, who had singled, with a seventh-inning double. [The Sporting News]
