The Twins came up with a pair of three-run innings, got a shutout effort from Bert Blyleven for eight-plus frames and defeated the Royals, 7-2. Steve Braun delivered a two-run single in the third and Rod Carew followed with a base hit for a 3-0 lead. Minnesota kayoed loser Al Fitzmorris in the fifth with three more tallies, Eric Soderholm singling home a pair. Glenn Borgmann hit a solo homer in the eighth for the winners' final run.

The Royals spoiled Blyleven's shutout in the ninth when Tony Solaita doubled home Al Cowens, who had walked. Hal McRae, who also had walked, scored on an error by outfielder Braun on Solaita's hit. [The Sporting News]
