The Orioles pulled within 1½ games of the Yankees in the East Division by posting a 4-0 victory behind the pitching of Jim Palmer. The Orioles snapped the scoreless duel between Palmer and Doc Medich with a run in the seventh inning on a double by Elrod Hendricks, safe bunt by Mark Belanger and sacrifice fly by Al Bumbry.

Medich was lifted in the eighth after yielding a single to Rich Coggins and hitting Tommy Davis with a pitch. Reliever Sparky Lyle struck out Bob Oliver, but Paul Blair hit the next pitch for a three-run homer to clinch the Oriole victory. [The Sporting News]
