The Reds had a chance to cut into the Dodgers' lead in the West Division race, but Cincy ran into a tough customer in Bill Greif and lost to the Padres, 6-1. Greif yielded only six hits. The Padres, who wrecked Jack Billingham's bid for his 20th victory, scored a run in the first inning on a single by Glenn Beckert and double by Willie McCovey. Singles by Derrel Thomas and Fred Kendall and an infield out by Enzo Hernandez added a run in the second.

The Padres kayoed Billingham in the third after a single by Beckert, double by Johnny Grubb and intentional pass to McCovey loaded the bases. Dave Winfield singled, driving in two runs. After a hit by Thomas filled the sacks again, McCovey scored as Kendall grounded into a double play. Winfield accounted for the Padres' last run with a homer off Tom Hall in the fifth inning.
