Completing a sweep of the three-game series, the Orioles shut out the Yankees, 7-0, on the three-hit pitching of McNally and moved into first place by one-half length in the East Division race. The Orioles led by only 1-0 on a fifth-inning homer by Don Baylor before breaking loose in the last two frames.

In the eighth, a safe bunt by Enos Cabell, sacrifice by Andy Etchebarren, single by Paul Blair and double by Bobby Grich made it 3-0 and then in the ninth the Orioles turned the game into a rout with four runs on singles by Brooks Robinson, Etchebarren, Mark Belanger and Tommy Davis, two walks and a passed ball.
