A six-run explosion in the second inning, capped with a bases-loaded double by Johnny Bench, propelled the Reds to an 8-4 victory over the Giants. Fred Norman delivered the first run with a single. Two more runs crossed the plate on bases-loaded passes to Pete Rose and Cesar Geronimo before Bench cleared the sacks with his double.

A single by Geronimo added a run in the fifth. The Reds completed their scoring with doubles by Rose and Bench in the seventh. Gary Thomasson hit a three-run homer for the Giants. [The Sporting News]
