After the Royals tied the score with an unearned run in the ninth inning, Amos Otis singled with the bases loaded in the 10th to defeat the Athletics, 4-3. The Royals counted twice off Vida Blue in the fifth, but the A's pulled even with a single by Bert Campaneris and homer by Joe Rudi in the sixth before going ahead in the seventh when Reggie Jackson singled, stole second, took third on a sacrifice and scored on a single by Sal Bando.

With two out in the Royals' ninth, Cookie Rojas hit a grounder that went through Gene Tenace. Fred Patek, running for Rojas, stole second and continued to third on a throwing error by Ray Fosse. Orlando Cepeda then batted for Jim Wohlford and singled to tie the score. In the 10th, Al Cowens hit a one-out single off Rollie Fingers. Paul Lindblad relieved and gave up a double by George Brett and intentional pass to Hal McRae to load the bases.
