With only 10 games left on the Cincinnati schedule, the Reds fell 3½ lengths behind the Dodgers in the West Division after losing to the Giants, 4-3. The Reds collected only four hits off Mike Caldwell, but scored one run on a homer by Johnny Bench in the fourth inning and twice more on two walks and a double by Tony Perez in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead.

The Giants tied the score against Clay Kirby in the seventh when Ed Goodson singled, Steve Ontiveros doubled, Chris Speier grounded out and Dave Rader hit a sacrifice fly. Then in the eighth, Tito Fuentes beat out an infield hit, stole second and scored the winning run on a single by Gary Thomasson. [The Sporting News]
