The Yankees moved into a first-place tie with the Orioles in the East Division by sweeping a twi-night doubleheader with the Indians, 5-4 and 3-0. The Yankees beat Gaylord Perry in the lidlifter, breaking a 4-4 tie with a run after two were out in the ninth inning. Elliott Maddox singled and scored when Bobby Murcer tripled for his third RBI of the game.

Larry Gura pitched a shutout in the nightcap and gained his fifth straight victory without a defeat since coming up from Syracuse (International). The Yankees counted twice in the fourth inning on a double by Maddox, a hit batsman, single by Lou Piniella and double by Chris Chambliss. Maddox doubled again in the sixth, advanced on an infield out and scored when Piniella hit the Yankees' 67th sacrifice fly of the season for a new major league record.
