Pat Kelly walked to open the stanza and went to second on a wild pickoff throw. Bucky Dent beat out a bunt. Jorge Orta singled, scoring Kelly and moving Dent to third. Dent then scored as Carlos May grounded into a double play.

Johnson yielded a single by Joe Rudi for the A's third hit of the game in the eighth and was removed in favor of Forster with two out. Forster was wild, walking four in the last 1 1/3 innings, but struck out three and succeeded in registering his 23rd save of the season. [The Sporting News]
