Breaking up a pitching duel, Elliott Maddox drove in a run with a single in the 10th inning for his third hit of the game to give the Yankees a 1-0 victory over the Red Sox. Doc Medich posted the shutout on a seven-hitter.

Bill Lee, who was the loser, also allowed seven hits, but two of them, along with a walk, led to his defeat in the 10th. Sandy Alomar drew a pass to lead off. Fred Stanley sacrificed. Roy White beat out an infield hit, moving Alomar to third, and Maddox followed with his game-winning single. [The Sporting News]
