The Orioles, with Earl Williams and Bobby Grich homering and driving in three runs apiece, increased their A. L. East lead over the idle Yankees to a full game with a 12-6 victory over the Tigers. Baltimore tallied five times in the second, Brooks Robinson plating the first two with a single, then scoring ahead of Williams' homer. Dave Lemanczyk, relieving loser Mickey Lolich, walked two batters and gave up an RBI single to Grich. Williams singled home a run in the third, and Paul Blair, Grich and Tommy Davis delivered RBI hits in a three-run fourth.

Grich hit a solo homer in the sixth and Mark Belanger drove in the final two Baltimore runs in the ninth with a bases-loaded single. Bill Freehan doubled to knock in the Tigers' first two runs in the third, then singled home another with two out in the fifth to start a three-run rally.
