Playing the season's final game under Ken Aspromonte, who had been fired as manager, the Indians defeated the Red Sox, 8-6. Frank Robinson, who was named Aspromonte's successor the following day, batted in two of the Indians' runs with a homer and sacrifice fly.

Rick Burleson homered for the Red Sox and also capped a three-run rally in the eighth inning with a double that tied the score at 6-6. Rusty Torres smashed the tie with a homer in the ninth. Duane Kuiper followed with a single and scored an insurance run on a double by Oscar Gamble to nail down Gaylord Perry's 21st victory. [The Sporting News]
