Although Gene Tenace hit a grand-slam homer, the Athletics lost to the White Sox, who rallied for six runs in the last two innings to defeat the defending world champions, 7-5. Tenace's blow off Jim Kaat in the third inning staked the A's to a 5-1 lead.

The White Sox strung together five singles for three runs in the eighth before winning the game in the ninth. Jorge Orta doubled and, after two out, Ken Henderson walked. Pat Kelly then delivered a pinch-triple for the deciding blow and scored an insurance run on a double by Carlos May. [The Sporting News]
