Catching up with Mike Marshall, the Reds scored two runs off the relief ace in a ninth-inning rally to defeat the Dodgers, 4-3. Bill Buckner hit a two-run homer for the Dodgers, who had a 3-0 lead until Ed Armbrister delivered a pinch-double for the Reds in the sixth and scored on a single by Joe Morgan. Marshall replaced Andy Messersmith in the seventh after a walk to Tony Perez and double by Cesar Geronimo. Marshall walked Ken Griffey on four pitches and yielded a sacrifice fly by Darrel Chaney before retiring the side.

In the ninth, Griffey touched off the Reds' rally with a triple and scored the tying run on a single by Chaney. Doug Flynn sacrificed.
