Using a three-run fourth inning, the Cubs handed the Pirates their first setback of the season, 4-2, with three Chicago hurlers stopping Pittsburgh on six hits. Jerry Morales hit the Bruins' first homer of the season in the second inning, then singled to get a three-run fourth started. He stole second and scored on Manny Trillo's single.

Steve Swisher, who followed with a run-scoring double, came home himself on winning pitcher Rick Reuschel's infield hit and a forceout. Pirate runs in the fifth came on a single by Dave Parker, Manny Sanguillen's triple and a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Ed Kirkpatrick. [The Sporting News]
