Claudell Washington singled home what proved to be the winning run in the top of the ninth as the Athletics hung on to nip the Royals, 3-2. The A's took a 1-0 lead in the second when Gene Tenace walked and came all the way around on Ted Kubiak's double into the left-field corner. The Royals tied the score in the home half of the frame when Hal McRae walked and swiped second. He scored when Sal Bando threw away Harmon Killebrew's chopper down the third base line.

Oakland went ahead, 2-1, in the sixth when Kubiak singled after a double by Joe Rudi and walks to Billy Williams and Gene Tenace loaded the bases. Winner Ken Holtzman needed final-out help from Rollie Fingers after the Royals scored one run in the ninth. [The Sporting News]
