Harmon Killebrew hit his first homer in a Kansas City uniform and 560th of his career to start the Royals' scoring in a 6-2 victory over the Athletics. After Killebrew's blast tied the score at 1-1 in the second inning, the Royals went ahead in the third when Amos Otis singled, stole second and crossed the plate on a single by John Mayberry.

The Royals then put the game away with three runs in the fourth on a walk to Killebrew. singles by George Brett and Cookie Rojas, sacrifice fly by Jim Wohlford, squeeze bunt by Buck Martinez and single by Frank White. Nelson Briles limited the A's to five hits with their runs coming on a homer by Sal Bando in the first inning and another by Claudell Washington, his first in the major leagues, in the eighth.
