Stepping in after Jim Bibby was kayoed in the first inning, Jim Umbarger pitched shutout ball and gained his first major league victory when the Rangers trounced the White Sox, 14-4. The Rangers started the game with three runs off Wilbur Wood in the first, but Bibby retired only one batter in the White Sox half, giving up four runs on two walks, a single by Bill Melton, an error and triple by Carlos May.

Umbarger, a lefthander from Arizona State who pitched for Pittsfield (Eastern) last season, took over and handcuffed the White Sox on five hits over the next 7 2/3 innings before yielding the mound to Jim Merritt in the ninth. The Rangers exploded for five runs in the third, two scoring on a homer by Jeff Burroughs, and breezed the rest of the way behind an 18-hit attack that also included a circuit clout by Willie Davis.
