A walk to Nate Colbert, a groundout, infield single by Leon Roberts and sacrifice fly by Mickey Stanley gave the Tigers their run in the second before Bobby Bonds tied the score with a homer in the third.

The Yankees opened the seventh with two runs on a single by Chris Chambliss, wild throw by Vern Ruhle on a bunt by Thurman Munson and a double by Ed Herrmann.
