The inability of George Hendrick to hang on to a bloop fly ball in short center field led to five runs in the fifth inning and enabled the Tigers to defeat the Indians, 6-2. The Indians counted their runs in the first on a triple by Tommy McCraw, infield out by Hendrick and homer by John Ellis.

In the fifth, Dan Meyer and Art James singled for the Tigers. Then, with two out, Hendrick ran a long way for a fly by Ron LeFlore, but dropped the ball as two runs scored. LeFlore was given credit for a double. Gary Sutherland followed with a single, driving in LeFlore. Willie Horton put the cap on the inning by hitting a homer to seal the defeat for Gaylord Perry.
