Jim Kaat gained his second victory of the year and ninth straight over two seasons but needed help from Terry Forster before the White Sox defeated the Royals, 7-3. The Royals were stopped on a five-game winning streak, while the White Sox clipped their string of five losses.

The White Sox jumped on Bruce Dal Canton for five runs in the first two innings and added their other tallies when Brian Downing homered in the third after Bucky Dent was safe on an error. The Royals forced the exit of Kaat in the seventh when they scored on a single by Harmon Killebrew, a forceout, single by Cookie Rojas, double by Jim Wohlford and single by Amos Otis.
