An error and passed ball in the sixth inning allowed the Expos to score a run without the benefit of a hit for a 4-3 victory over the Pirates. Al Oliver homered for the Pirates in the first, but the Expos ganged up on Dock Ellis for three runs in the second on a single by Larry Biittner, double by Larry Parrish and singles by Larry Lintz and Tim Foli. The Pirates tied the score in the sixth when Richie Zisk hit a bases-loaded single.

In the home half, Pepe Mangual reached base on a grounder when Willie Stargell dropped the throw to first. Biittner walked and after a sacrifice and intentional pass to Barry Foote, catcher Manny Sanguillen let a pitch by Ellis get away for a passed ball that allowed Mangual to score.
