An unearned run with two out in the ninth inning enabled the Reds to defeat the Giants, 5-4. With one away, Joe Morgan doubled. After an intentional pass to Johnny Bench, Tony Perez struck out. Charlie Williams, on the mound in relief for the Giants, uncorked a wild pitch and catcher Marc Hill then threw wildly to third trying to nail Morgan, who scored the winning run.

The Reds counted their first three runs in the fifth on four walks and a single by Dave Concepcion for their only hit off John D'Acquisto, forcing his departure. After the Giants took a 4-3 lead in the seventh, the Reds tied the score in their half with doubles by Merv Rettenmund and Pete Rose. [The Sporting News]
