Hitless in four previous trips this season, Ken McMullen came off the bench and smashed a grand-slam homer in the sixth inning to climax the Dodgers' six-run outburst in an 11-6 victory over the Padres. Dave Winfield staged a virtual one-man show for the Padres, driving in five runs with four hits, including a homer with two men on base. Ron Cey also hit a three-run homer for the Dodgers, who were trailing, 5-4, before their outburst in the sixth.

Steve Yeager started the stanza with a walk and scored the tying run on singles by Lee Lacy and Davey Lopes. Danny Frisella, relieving Dave Freisleben, passed Steve Garvey intentionally to load the bases and then walked Cey to force in a run before McMullen batted for Willie Crawford and hit his homer.
