Bill Madlock hit two doubles, each driving in a run, to support the pitching of Steve Stone as the Cubs defeated the Phillies, 4-1. Stone gave up the Phillies' tally in the second inning on singles by Greg Luzinski and Bob Boone and a double by Mike Anderson.

The Cubs went ahead in the next stanza with two runs on a pass to Don Kessinger, wild pitch by Jim Lonborg, a double by Madlock and an error. The clinching pair followed in the fifth on two-baggers by Jose Cardenal, Madlock and Jerry Morales. [The Sporting News]
