A two-out single by Von Joshua in the ninth inning scored pinch-runner Derrel Thomas and brought the Giants a 6-5 victory over the Astros. Thomas was on base in place of Steve Ontiveros, who had doubled. The Giants, taking advantage of J.R. Richard's wildness, scored three runs in the first two innings, but the Astros rallied to the tie game in the fourth, with two of their tallies coming on a homer by Doug Rader.

Wayne Granger, the third of six pitchers used by the Astros, passed Joshua with the bases loaded to force in a run in the seventh, but Gary Lavelle, third of five hurlers to appear for the Giants, returned the favor by walking Cliff Johnson with the sacks filled in the eighth.
