Andy Messersmith tied the major league record for most doubles by a pitcher in one game, hitting three, as the Dodgers defeated the Giants, 6-5. After hitting a wasted double in the second inning, Messersmith doubled again in the sixth to drive in Rick Auerbach, who had walked. Davey Lopes followed with a single, scoring Messersmith, to put the Dodgers ahead, 5-4. Messersmith doubled for a third time in the eighth and counted what proved to be the winning run on a throwing error by Charlie Williams.
