The Royals eased ahead of the Athletics into first place in the A.L. West by beating the White Sox, 7-5. Harmon Killebrew snapped a 3-3 tie with a leadoff homer in the sixth. Hal McRae delivered a bases-loaded triple in the following inning for a 7-3 lead. The White Sox rallied with two in the ninth when Brian Downing walked and Jorge Orta homered.

Amos Otis tripled home one of two third-inning Royals' runs and doubled home another in the fifth. Singles by Orta, Pat Kelly and Carlos May, plus a run-scoring double play accounted for two White Sox tallies in the sixth to tie the score. [The Sporting News]
