Facing defeat when the Angels scored in the 13th inning, the Royals rallied for two runs in their half to come out ahead, 11-10, in a game marked by a total of 33 hits. The Angels, who had a two-run homer by Joe Lahoud, held a 9-7 lead with two out in the seventh when Jim Wohlford beat out a bunt and Tony Solaita tied the score with a pinch-homer.

 In the 13th, Tommy Harper singled, stole second and raced home on an infield single by Dave Chalk to break the deadlock. George Brett singled with one away in the Royals' half and was forced by Bob Stinson for the second out, but Cookie Rojas came through with a double, driving in Stinson, and Buck Martinez followed with a single as Rojas scored the winning run.
