An infield hit by Lenny Randle with two out in the ninth inning enabled the Rangers to defeat the White Sox, 2-1, for their fifth straight victory. The Rangers scored their first run in the fourth on singles by Leo Cardenas, Jeff Burroughs and Jim Fregosi. The White Sox tied the game with an unearned run in the fifth. After Fregosi dropped a foul pop by Brian Downing for an error, Downing returned to the plate and doubled. After moving up on an infield out, Downing came home on a sacrifice fly by Buddy Bradford.

The Rangers' winning run also was unearned. With one out, Jim Sundberg was hit by a pitch. Cesar Tovar grounded to shortstop Bucky Dent, who threw to second in an attempt to start a double play, but Jorge Orta dropped the ball.
