Coming off a poor road trip (1-5), the Cardinals opened a homestand by defeating the Cubs, 5-1, behind the three-hit pitching of Bob Forsch. The Cards began their attack quickly when Bake McBride homered on Rick Reuschel's third pitch of the game.

In the second, Ron Fairly singled, Keith Hernandez tripled and Ken Reitz homered for three more runs. The Cubs picked up a tainted tally in the fourth before the Cardinals added their last run in the fifth on a pass to Reggie Smith, wild pickoff throw by Milt Wilcox and sacrifice fly by Ted Simmons.
