Taking advantage of two errors, the Phillies scored four unearned runs in the first inning to start on their way to a 9-5 victory over the Pirates. Dave Cash opened with a single and when Larry Bowa grounded to Rennie Stennett, both runners were safe on the second baseman's wild throw, attempting to start a double play. Willie Montanez walked to load the bases. After Greg Luzinski popped up, Jay Johnstone lined to Richie Hebner, who threw the ball away trying for a double play, Cash scoring. Mike Schmidt then took full advantage of the situation with a three-run homer.

The Phillies added a run in the second on singles by Cash and Montanez and a grounder by Luzinski before making it 8-0 in the fourth when Wayne Twitchell doubled, Bowa singled, Montanez doubled and Johnstone singled. Dave Parker homered for the Pirates in the fifth, but the Phillies picked up a run in the sixth on a triple by Bowa and single by Tony Taylor.
