Reggie Smith had a perfect day at bat with two homers, a double and two singles, driving in five runs, but his efforts were not enough for the Cardinals, who lost to the Cubs, 8-6. Geoff Zahn, obtained from the Dodgers, made his first start for the Cubs and left in the fourth inning when the Cards took a 3-2 lead. Smith, who homered in the fourth, hit for the circuit again in the fifth.

The Cubs chased Lynn McGlothen and won the game with five runs in the seventh. After a single by Pete LaCock and two passes loaded the bases, another walk to Don Kessinger forced in one run. Jose Cardenal hit a sacrifice fly to tie the score at 4-4, and Bill Madlock singled to put the Cubs ahead.
